The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes
4.0
I got an advance copy from NewBooks magazine to review for them. So, what did I think?
Well... Very clever. A great idea, a time travelling serial killer, not quite like anything I've read before. It had the potential to be disorienting and convoluted but actually I appreciated the fact that the book expected you to keep up with the timelines, characters and plot.
I didn't actually like the idea that the house set up the murders and victims at all. I didn't think the plot needed such a silly element (belongs in a horror film) but as this wasn't emphasised it didn't bother me too much and I enjoyed the book despite it.
It was hard not to become too emotionally involved with each victim before they were killed, but Kirby was a strong heroine to root for to the end. I wouldn't want to see a sequel, can't see where it would go that would develop the story but would like to see a filmed version!
