Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov

Humbert Humbert did not let that slide.

The author's view on this book says a lot. Nabokov describes Humbert as "a vain and cruel wretch who manages to appear 'touching.'" This plays a lot into how Lolita isn't truly a love story, but more of a twisted tale of Humbert's use of subterfuge to manipulate prey and reader alike to achieve his perverted goals. Nabokov's writing is masterful and extremely rich, and he continues to be a favorite with the literary loopholes and tricks he employs on the reader, sometimes without the reader noticing. This writing style always makes for an entertaining read.

If you enjoy Nabokov's writing style, I would highly recommend Pale Fire, as you can enjoy his writing without having to follow the narrative of a pedophile.
