Memories of Ice by Steven Erikson

5.0

Before the rest of my thoughts, I just have one complaint, and it is not about the story itself, it's simply that the kindle version of the three malazan books that I've read have had SO many typos, it's very frustrating, this is not a self published series, it's freakin' malazan book of the fallen, so why do I constantly have to report errors? After 20 or so, I stopped doing it. One example was the fact that Gruntle was spelled Grumble two or three times, and he plays a huge role in this book.

Anyway, here goes nothing.

What can I say that every other person who has reviewed this book hasn't already said?

Nothing, but I will say this; this book touched me in a way I did not expect, with all of the things one hears before going into malazan book of the fallen, the complexity, the confusion, feeling lost...I did feel those things, at times, but overall this was a very, VERY solidly plotted book, with so many characters that I couldn't help but fall in love with. Iktovian, Korlat, Gruntle, Lady Envy, Ganoes Paran, Toc the Younger and so many more, each one unique, with something valuable to add to the story. The story, which was superb in just about every way. Everything leading up to the final book was fantastic, the world building was next level, exploring the t'lan i'mass, and especially the barghast was such a wonderful experience.

The theme of compassion really shined in this book, I've heard for years that this is one of the major themes in this series, and I had only seen slight glimpses of it in the previous two books, but it was front and center here, and I have no shame in saying I shed a tear (or two) especially in the last few chapters, I won't spoil anything, but if you have read this book, you know exactly what scene I am talking about.

This book had SO much hype in my head, and it surpassed it all, by a long long way. I am so glad that I finally took the dive into malazan this year, after reading a lot more adult fantasy over the last five or six years, otherwise I probably wouldn't have finished gardens of the moon.

This is about as close to a 10/10 a book has gotten for me since I first read words of radiance, the lies of locke lamorra, or Holy sister.

I am going to take april off, give myself some time to reflect on the first third of this series, then dive into house of chains, and I cannot wait.
