Absolutely beautiful. I had been meaning to read this book for the longest time, just letting it sit and my phone's library, waiting for one day when I would finally pick it up.
That day was today, about three hours ago.
I started reading Crush knowing for certain that I would enjoy it but not knowing just about how much.
In this book, we have several poems that are so personal and so beautifully atmospheric. The world Richard Siken paints with his words is dark, innocent (at times), messed up, so sad it's soul crushing, even funny sometimes, and overall so personal.
These poems carried each other until the last one of them. We had recurring words, themes and imagery that kept coming back when you least expected it. That was very interesting because no poem was independent from the others, they were truly arranged for this collection of poems to carry a message to us.
The way a verse could come unexpectedly almost knocked the breath out of my chest. The world turned to beauty, the flowers knocking against each other, the sun and the moon and the hunger for love. I will come back and back again to re read this, I am sure.
"You are a fever I am learning to live with, and everything is happening at the wrong end of a very long tunnel"
or
"Here I am leaving you clues. I am singing now while Rome burns. We are all just trying to be holy."
