i absolutely LOVED getting to experience the Vietnamese culture throughout this book, both via food and the history that Vivi learns through her time in Sài Gòn, and from what Lan shares with us. i really enjoyed our main characters as well - however i don’t feel like i felt the romantic connection in a way that warrants more than a fling between them? they felt more like a deep friendship to me. maybe with like another 50 pages i could have a different mindset on that, the ending did feel a bit rushed with all that was happening and i wish we could have seen a bit more

of Vivi and her mom talking in Vietnam, her moms reunion with her family, and also maybe a conversation between Lan and her family about taking the journalist position.

overall i did really love this but for those reasons knocked it down a star!
