The Last by Hanna Jameson

This was THE most stressful book to read during COVID-19, but I wanted something easy, breezy and quick to read, and I certainly achieved that, devouring 130 pages in one whole day. But there were so many triggers: nuclear apocalypse, death of a child, suicide, drug use/abuse, attempted rape, cannibalism. And a really scary scene in a supermarket. Of course. I used to be in two bookclubs that read only dystopian/post-apocalyptic fiction, but it's actually been a while since I read anything from the genre. Still, this was good enough, with shades of The Road and The Girl with All the Gifts as well as some really annoying characters and a lame and hastily resolved murder mystery. I did feel very caught up in the story, but it was so stressful my heart was racing. I literally had to switch to Mary Poppins one night, I was that anxious!
