I saw the movie and really was curious to read the book as I heard ot was even better then the movie. Thst wasn't wrong..I listened to the audiobook and it was indeed super impressed. There were alot of details left out or changed into the movie from the book that would have changed my perspective on Helen and Jake's relationship. They are younger in the book but have a greater age gap. Hes 22 and she's 32, she's known him since ge was 16 as he's her brothers best friend.
He admits to always having a huge crush on her since 16 and seeing her married ( shes now divorced).

This started off heated for Helen amd Jake when she loses a game and is dared to kiss Jake at her grandma's house in Chicago, which is on the way to their Wyoming wilderness trek they've both signed up for ( she didn’t know he was going).

She gets frustrated and asks him to not tell anyone they know eachother. Jake complies. They find out all of the other hikers are college age and semi experienced hikers, Helen feelss left out and alone the entire time. Jake gives her a note which she saves. She gets jealous of him and another hiker who she witnesses him kissing after she thinks they are feeling more connected. She pulls away again.

I loved the insights into Helens mind and thoughts. All her insecurities come to light but she also feels stronger and accomplished during the trip. I really vibed with her character and cheered on her and Jakes bonding time. Very well written story. Closed door only in Helen's pov.
