Words cannot describe how much I dislike the main character. The number of times Dr Mason calls himself an idiot is not enough. He's supposed to be a man of science, he's supposed to have analytical mind, yet all he does is jump into countless conclusions. No proof to back his assumptions? Who caaares! *points his loaded gun at every suspect* One of the villains calls him a "very brave man" at some point, which must have been a typo in the copy, and it should read "a very stupid man". There are also no other discernible characters who could distract the reader from the Mason-induced misery. The cast is either extremely stereotypical or completely flat. They barely interact with each other, 70% of the book are just Dr Mason going insane, the other 30% are taken up by needless wordy descriptions of the ice-cap, the noisy tractor, the cold, and random info dumps that added very little to the story.
