A wonderfully imaginative series of nested stories-within-stories, drawing from rich mythologies and traditions; just at the moment when you're sure the author is literally making it up as she goes along, seemingly random details from hundreds of pages earlier snap into place with precision as these unlikely tales proceed. My only gripe is that the writing style is a little precious; especially in the earlier chapters and the outermost story, almost every sensory detail is illustrated with a heady and occasionally non-sequitur metaphor, which at times recall the brilliant imagery of Ray Bradbury and at other times just feel a little saccharine.
