I really liked the mystery itself--thrilling--and I found the violent opposition to the reading of Dante and the study of a "vulgar" modern language like Italian in the US to be fascinating. The characters, however, are mostly undeveloped to the point that it's difficult to tell them apart, and the prose that tries to imitate the time period in which its set is dense but awkward.
