Abercrombie is a cool dude, but I feel like what he did to Yarvi and Thorn in this book book wasn't cool at all, as he sidelined and even cut down their vastly more interesting stories in order to facilitate a more generic one. The tale of how a Frail and Pale Princess managed to rise to be a Frail and Pale Queen Conqueror of All.
It's probably a good story from the perspective of a frail and pale person who wants to be inspired by seeing themselves as a powerful queen, but I just wanted more of what book 1 and book 2 was about. People getting shit done with their own hands by whatever means necessary. I really don't want to read about princesses with a bunch of loyal servants doing her bidding because she's just so good and strong in her own special way...
When I pick up an Abercrombie book, I expect the female characters to be more like this:
And less like this:
It was very, very disappointing. Just an empty book full of words with none of the fun-grimdark Abercrombie flavour.
