Springtime in Chernobyl by Emmanuel Lepage

5.0

My first 5-star read of 2023! A book worth reading, rereading, and gifting.

With exquisitely drawn pictures of his journey, stay, and return from Chernobyl and the people and places he meets and encounters, the author describes his preconceptions of this infamous site and all the ways it both complies with and defies his expectations. I love the bursts of colour interspersed with dark line drawings. It enables me to see in my mind's eye a place that's more than broken furniture and abandoned buildings.

The ever present danger symbolised by the "tik tik" sound made by the Geiger counter in so many panels is scary. I love the parallel with the sound the crocodile in Peter Pan (to be accurate, the clock it swallowed) makes as it approaches.
