“I cannot see how that would be the case,” he said solemnly. “If anger never helped, then why would you have it at all? Some humans are born with extra fingers or toes, yes, but all of you are born with at least a little bit of anger. It must do something of use.”

4.75 “eat the rich” stars! this is the second time i’ve read this book and it was just as good as the first time. i’m actually mad that olivia atwater isn’t more mainstream because there’s just something about her writing that really touches your heart.

there were so many things i enjoyed about this story; it’s mr. jubilee’s kindness and how earnest he was about everything. it’s effie’s kindness and willingness to help even those who didn’t deserve it, and also her anger, which we later found out meant a great deal. i liked how the book handled the topic of anger itself; yes, a huge uncontrollable amount of it could be harmful and even abusive in the wrong hands, but just the right amount of it could keep you safe from harm. anger could bring justice, complacency could kill your spirits. as mr. jubilee said, anger is an emotion everyone has, so there must be some good to it. it doesn’t always have to be destructive, right?

another thing i would like to add is that effie reminded me so much of sophie hatter. the most obvious ones were her anger and general crankiness, but another thing was her magic. sophie could speak things into existence, with her hat, with the scarecrow, while effie worked similar magic with her stitches. mr. jubilee wasn’t exactly the same as howl, but the way he cared for effie reminded me of him all the same. i just love them, and i wish there were more of them.

words can’t express just how much i adore lord blackthorn. i liked this book so much better than the first one. although i can’t help but wish for this book to be longer because the romance aspect between effie and jubilee could be executed better.
