Alienated by Melissa Landers

5.0

My review is originally posted on Read it in a Day
Contains mild spoilers!

I found Alienated the day before it was released. (February 4) I immediately added it to my wishlist, but I didn’t think I would buy it so soon. Other books came out that day, I said, I have tons of books to read, and I don’t know this author. I’m relatively poor and shouldn’t spend so much money on books.

But the story line tugged at me. I greedily acquired it the day after it came out.

I am so glad I did.

Cara is an overachieving, perfectionist, grade loving girl. Perfect grades, valedictorian. She’s a hard worker, a passionate person. When she is picked to house the first ever foreign exchange program with the L’eihr named Aelyx-did I mention that aliens made contact two years before? Insane, right?

Aelyx, and all the L’eihrs for that matter tend to be…emotionless zombies. At least they’re not the emotional beings we tend to be.

So opposites clash when they’re thrown together into the same house. Is there middle ground for the two of them? Can they learn to deal with each other’s differences to be friends…or more than that?

What I really liked about this book is how Landers was able to show the differences in their personalities. Neither one is in the wrong when it comes to their personalities. They’re just different and that’s okay. They learn how to understand each other like that.

I also love how the subject of racism flows in the story line. Certain people don’t want the aliens to live among us, they’re afraid of what they can do, that they’ll destroy them. The fear of the unknown is a powerful thing. It can hinder us from doing great things and from great friendships with people that are sort of different…like they only have four toes or something like that.

The plot is engaging. Landers does a great job at keep the reader’s interest as Aelyx tries to go through our normal high school experience, while dealing with his patriotic identity to his home. Likewise, Cara has to deal with being shunned and rejected by people who were once her friends and neighbors over her willingness to befriend Aelyx and the other L’eihrs, for that matter.

I literally read this in one sitting and couldn’t put it down. I developed a deep crush for Aelyx. Pretty amazing.

The ending is a cliffhanger. A hopeful one, to be sure, but a cliff hanger still, and one that makes me wish it was next year already so I can get my hands on book number two. (It just had a cover reveal)
