Amazing Grace: The Life of John Newton and the Surprising Story Behind His Song by Bruce Hindmarsh, Craig Borlase

Never in a million years would I equate one of the most memorable and beautiful songs with a former slave trader. But John Newton's story isn't just about being a slave trader, at one point he was practically a slave, himself.
This is a fascinating story set in the time where the new world was still in its childhood and the old world was still the domineer. It does have a couple of places where some of the descriptions might curdle blood, but if anything, they will give someone a concept of what it was actually like and would be worth reading through as it shows how barbaric the slave trade truly was.
