Gavin de Becker is undoubtedly one of the world's experts on violence. In this fascinating book (from 1997) he looks at how we can use our natural instincts to help and protect is in moments of danger. Fear, he argues, should not be debilitating but in fact should set you free as it is an important instinct that we evolved. Not sure about a situation, trust your instinct and play better safe than sorry.
This book is very much focused on the USA which, for a developed nation, has an appalling crime and homicide rate, not to mention an unhealthy obsession with firearms.
Part guide, self-help book, I found it insightful, entertaining, and ultimately very useful. Throw worry aside, but embrace fear ... you never know when you will need it.
