Wow this was a ride! I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would upon the start. I really liked that you got to get to know the MCs through this journey they take and the world’s magic system felt unique.
That said, I waited to read this until it was trad published and I didn’t expect there to be so many typos  (in the KU version) and easily fixable errors, especially in the ending which make me think they never updated this version. I think I would have rated this 5 stars otherwise, because I had such a fun time reading it and it has one of my favorite tropes, done exceptionally well.

I really wish I had not known going into this that there was a twist, because I was on high alert the whole time I read, looking for little hints as to what was going to happen. I never would have guessed that twist though, so I was still very pleasantly surprised by the ending! But thinking about this afterwards, the big reveal makes me question things that happen earlier in the book. We are inside Brynn/Jovies head for most of the story, but have no idea about the events leading up to the twist, making her an unreliable Narrator and leaving me with so many questions. Were her feelings towards Acker the whole time a lie? How were they able to contact Maile and coordinate with them if she seemingly had no contact with them? How long has Beau been on Brynn/Jovies side? How was Messer able to awaken his powers?  I hope the next book will fill in some of the many plot holes created by the twist ending.
