The Summer Tree by Guy Gavriel Kay

It was hard for me to become immersed with this book. Fantasy worlds require at least a little exposition. A large part of the book consist of dialogues between the characters, with no explanation of who or what they are talking about. Not only is this extremely annoying, but it's hard to care about the characters when you're not sure what's going on. The characters were also not believable. In the very beginning of the book, a man proposes to bring them from this real world, to another, fantastical one. Not once do the characters react with denial, or even surprise. They basically accept his proposal with a shrug. Not only do they not once question how this event is possible, they also never ask why they're being brought to the other world!
SpoilerAnd once they arrive in the other world, they immediately join society and court in meaningless frivolity, without any hint to their purpose of being there in the first place.
I'm not even sure if there's an actual plot in the story. I suppose a recognizable plot would emerge if I read the rest of the trilogy, but I have no desire to do so.
