Esperanza Rising
by Pam Muñoz Ryan
this was one of my favorite books as a kid, and i found it at goodwill recently and knew it must’ve been fate. i had no idea the author wrote this story as a parallel to her grandmother’s life, and i think that really rounds off the themes of feminine strength and cultural identity in the novel. it’s an easy read, obviously meant for younger audiences, but the story is one of immigration and class status and discrimination—all too relevant—as well as the mexican repatriation, which is often overlooked in history.
i feel connected to my younger self and to another larger, more spiritual unity <3
