Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs

Normally, the first book in a series is a pretty safe place to start. Not so with this series.

There's a companion novella called "Alpha & Omega" that's required to understand anything that's happening at the beginning of this book. I know, because I didn't read it and didn't have a clue what was going on.

I'd also say that reading the first Mercy Thompson novel, "Moon Called," is essential to understanding the dynamics at play in this book. "Cry Wolf" is not interested in explaining the world that the Mercy Thompson series built or explaining the relationship that the novella established.

That said, if you've read a bunch of other stuff before you get here, this is quite an enjoyable book. It's got a solid villain, some cool relationship dynamics between the characters, and an engaging plot. I liked it. I just wish I had read the novella first.
