Mama's Boy: A Story from Our Americas by Dustin Lance Black

3.0

This is such a beautiful dedication to Rose Anna Bisch. Her story of triumph is the inspiration of movies. I just loved the story of her swimming! And her work in a microbiology lab was such an amazing connection for me (that’s my job!). Wow is she amazing.
I’m on the fence between 3 and 4 stars because I want to give it 4 for her story, but I struggled with the portrayal of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It seemed that his experiences growing up (which sound so tough, I can’t imagine, my experience in the church has been nothing like this, but there are imperfect people everywhere and he truly experienced some of the worst) were being generalized for the entire faith. It also felt like he was mocking the beliefs of members of the Church, which is harmful. We shouldn’t be mocking anyone’s faith. But again, his mom is just incredible. I also loved his reflection on his relationship with his brother Marcus, who’s light was dimmed too soon.
