I felt as though I'd been put through an emotional wringer by the end of this book, it certainly inspired some strong emotions. Main character Silla escapes with her little sister from an abusive father and a weak mother in London to her aunt's large, isolated house, La Baume. Things are happy for a while but then events take a sinister turn and Silla is forced to deal with her aunt's madness whilst protecting her sister amid fears for her own sanity. The writer tightens the screw of suspense gradually with each chapter and there's a massive twist in the plot that I really did not see coming - at all! There is a love story entwined around the fear but it's like no love story I've read before. Some profanity in the book and a very disquieting read so more suitable for older readers, this is a very dark story that begs to be read with the lights firmly switched on - I loved it.
