The Wolf Den
by Elodie Harper
I enjoyed this book overall.
The writing style did throw me for a loop though, you wouldn’t really know it was supposed to be written in the time of Pompeii, it could be any time, even modern day. That for me is where the books falls down in terms of the world building of the place and time the book was set, it lacked a lot of depth.
Because it’s so modernly written, it did take a bit of the essence of the story away for me, although, the fact that it was written in the style that it was, made it a very easy read (in language not topic).
This is a dark book in terms of story line and content, and tragically the life of so many Roman slaves. Watching the choices the main FMC makes / chooses to make to survive the life she has been forced into is painful at times. The reality being, what choices would any of us make in that situation.
The friendship between the women was well done, showing the comradeship and protectiveness towards each other, as well as the jealousy and envy. Showcasing well how much they needed each other to survive, and at the same time, how much they needed to compete with each other to survive.
A solid read and I’ll continue with the next book in the series.
