Between Two Thorns by Emma Newman

4.0

*I recevied this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*
Between Two Thorns was definitely a unique read. It had a mix of modern and Victorian, which was actually very interesting. There were numerous different points of view, and usually that bothers me, but I was actually very happy with the way it was done in the book.

I felt very bad for Catherine throughout this entire book. I felt that her life was entirely unfair, and I truly hate her family. I know her brother is supposed to be better than the rest, but in a way he angered me more than any of the others. He won’t do anything to help his sister, he let’s her be abused and used, and then proceeds to call her selfish for having the guts to walk away.

Will was a different character because I never felt bad for him. His life was far too easy, even if he didn’t enjoy it and would’ve wished for more. At times I felt he treated those around him disparagingly, but I did find his wanting to protect Catherine as much as he could admirable.

There is an interesting story that seems like it will be followed throughout the trilogy, and Max and the gargoyle were definitely some of my favorite characters in this first installment. Emma Newman does a fantastic job of mixing fantasy with seeming mundane life.

I will definitely continue this series and I would probably give it a 4 out of 5 stars. The only reason for the slightly lower rating, would be because at certain parts it did feel over-explained and a bit tedious. I would imagine that this will get better as the author delves further into this word.
