The Seventh Star by Mark Hayden

Wow, ok. I had some gripes about the 6th book, Eight Kings. Even though I know that these were written well before I posted a review, it sure seemed like the author listened to me specifically and course corrected in book #7!

First off, Conrad and Mina have totally separate things to do for most of the book. *Whew!* They support each other instead of whatever was going on in the last book. It just feels like a stronger relationship than the bratty princess Mina and worshipping Conrad narrative that was emerging in the previous book.

The introduction of the Tom Morton and Elaine Fraser in this one was perfectly timed. They filled my Uncle C+Vicky role, while Conrad had a legitimate challenge with his new partner, Karina Kent. The case was also much more up Conrad's alley than the last one, and not a huge waste of his talents (unlike babysitting rich people and covens, I mean, "mediation").

While the POV did shift around in this story, it was expertly handled this time - switching from Conrad's first person to third person for Tom and Elaine. So much easier to follow, and not as jarring from an immersion perspective.

I'm already nose deep in the next installment, and it seems to be following this updated model from The Seventh Star. Here's to hoping they continue to improve!
