Diary of a 6th Grade Ninja 13: Kablooie by Marcus Emerson

2.0

An utter disappointment.

First, let me say that I have been a big fan of this series, from books 1 to 12. I especially like book 12, the latest entry, for setting up a lot of plot points and developing some characters. However, book 13, while having good humor and art, is a ridiculous regression in story.

I started this book series when I was a pre-teen. But years have passed, and I’ve grown out of this series. Even still, I try to go back to each new book, putting myself in the eyes of 12 year old me first reading this book.

4 years have passed in real life since book 12’s interesting premise of things getting crazy, and I sadly don’t think this book matches up to this expectation at all. Suckerpunch makes absolutely no appearance whatsoever, and instead of having a new villain, it’s just Wyatt and Carlyle again. The plot is a basic scavenger hunt (which has been done already!), and the worst part is, most of the characters have nothing to do. Chase and Naomi are paired together, even though they were also paired in the last book. Faith has barely any chemistry with Chase, despite the solid promise at the end of the last book. And it all takes place in one day, in a random arcade place, instead of Buchanan School. Gidget and Slug are barely characters anymore! And Wyatt has regressed to being another shady antagonist with the stupid red ninja goons.

Ultimately, it feels like a non-canon filler episode. If book 14 has to be this level again, then I hope the series ends soon. End it at book 15 with them all graduating from 6th grade, Suckerpunch being defeated, and Faith and Chase getting together.
