I might have a new favourite book.

The premise of this book already ticked so many boxes for me: sci-fi, end of the world story, autistic main character, to name a few. I was really interested in reading a story featuring an autistic protagonist, cause I'd never read anything like that before.

And I gotta say, this book exceeded all my expectations! For me, this was an unexpected find at a secondhand book shop, and I'm glad this book found me. Denise's way of experiencing the world and the life changing things that happen in the story was a wonderful thing to read. For me, she felt so much more realistic and relatable than a fearless heroic protaginist up against the end of the world.

Besides Denise, I also just loved how the book dealt with the conflicting emotions in people when faces with such catastrophic circumstances. It wasn't just 'evil, looting, selfish people' up against 'good, selfless, heroic survivors'. Many people were more morally grey, doing altruistic things, as well as selfish things.

Also loved that the end of the world scenario is described in a, at least to me, very realistic way. It's not over the top, as often happens in world ending stories. And the sci-fi elements of the world were very nicely built into the narrative and felt realistic.

In short, I will carry Denise's story in a special place in my heart. And I encourage anyone who'd like to experience an austistic point of view to read this. Don't be taken aback by its YA classification. The story feels very adult and well fleshed-out.
