Following three generations of Weyward women, spanning nearly five centuries, this book shares with us the strength and resilience necessary to overcome iniquities and tragedies.
The Weyward women have always had a special connection to nature and when properly prepared, can often control it. It is a blessing and a curse; the connection helping strengthen them but resulting in many adverse consequences within their lives.
Altha Weyward, a young healer in 1619 who recently lost her only family member, her mother, is accused of and put on trial for witchcraft. We follow her storyline as she battles broken promises and harm she has caused, while hoping to be exonerated and allowed free rein of the Weyward cottage once more.
Violet Ayres, the daughter of a viscount during WWII, also lost her mother, though when she was a baby. All she has left is a necklace with a ‘W’ engraved on it and the word ‘Weyward’ scratched into a floorboard, however Violet’s neglectful father opposes her search for answers and keeps her isolated and in the dark.
Kate Ayres, years after the death of her father, inherits an old cottage from her great aunt Violet after her death in 2019. When she finds out that’s she’s pregnant, Kate uses said cottage to escape in the night, hiding out from her abusive and controlling boyfriend. Curious as to why a great aunt she met only once would bequeath her with anything, she begins researching her family history.
I really loved this read! It was very sad at times, reading about the awful things these women had to go through but identically uplifting to know that their ancestors and their connection to their family made them each strong and able to support themselves and those who needed help.
I’m not entirely sure if Altha was meant to be queer or not but the way she spoke of her love for Grace and how she thought of Grace while having sex with Adam… ummm yea she’s gay, I don’t make the rules. We love a lesbian nature witch in the 1600s!!!
