I really liked the premise of this book. I think a Cinderella story where the Cinderella character is actually plotting with the “evil” stepmother and stepsisters is such a cool idea. Overall I did still enjoy the book, but Ash wasn’t the character we were told. We hear how her stepmother’s training made her the perfect spy, how she’s so clever and deceptive, how skilled she is at lying, but then as the story plays out she makes simple mistakes. She’s frequently slipping up in ways that a person with the level of training she claims to have never would. Even things as simple as getting distracted on critical missions and picking fights with the man she’s supposed to be wooing. In the moment she’ll acknowledge that something’s a bad idea, but she just goes ahead with it anyway. Based on the way she was described I expected Ash to have far more emotional control and act very logical, but she frequently gives into emotional impulses. Maybe the author is just trying to show us how much she cares about the situation, but I still think a character like that would understand that she has to feign apathy for the greater good.
It’s a fairly slow-paced story, but it kept me entertained. Although I know I’m being quite critical, I do think it’s worth reading. I’m just a bit disappointed, because I feel like there was so much missed potential here.
Also, just wanted to add that I listened to the audiobook for some of it and the narrator is amazing! She did such a fantastic job!
