The Ables by Jeremy Scott
4.0
I have feels about this book.
Pros:
Disabled protagonists! SUPER YAY (pun intended).
Antagonist twist was not what I expected.
Characters are likeable, a bit mentally/emotionally advanced for 12.
There was some acknowledgement that not all disability is treated equally.
Neutral:
Second most obvious protagonist "double twist."
Kids actually talked to parents for once.
Cons:
The first quarter was pretty awesome. Then they mostly managed to "solve" the main protagonist's disability. Similarly, any limitations posed by a cane, or wheelchair were pretty much completely ignored.
Overall, it was still a pretty good book, and I'm really glad it was written. I probably just had higher hopes for it than were rational. I guess... let me put it this way. I finished the book feeling like the live-action versions of the characters would be played by mostly/completely able-bodied actors. And that made me sad.
