The Boy from the Woods
by Harlan Coben
This was a strange read where the characters did not seem to have any internal lives, beyond what was necessary for the plot. The eponymous boy from the woods, for example, never sleeps inside, until somewhere in the middle of the book where he stays overnight in a hotel during a one night stand - so he isn't where he would otherwise be in the morning.
Similarly, the setting was strangely adjustable to the plot needs, a mountain town where it was still possible to travel on foot from the deep woods to various dispersed homes in less than an hour. A fantastic restaurant appears in the town, that a long time resident has always avoided because of, but now it is all okay because it changed hands! A character drives someone from New York to this town because .. actually I don't know why .. and then leaves again almost immediately, only to later be helicoptered into the town because it would be quick -- how far are we from New York?
