I found this a quite riveting read. The story of Lex, who grows up in a house and family of extreme neglect and abuse and eventually becomes the girl who escapes. This we know from the beginning of the book, effectively turning the classic thriller structure on its head as we already know the outcome. This works quite well as Dean gradually reveals the extent of what went on in the house saving a final twist for the last chapters of the book.
I’m not a big fan of ‘the big twist’ at the end as a trope, as I find that authors often rely too much on the twist as the thing the plot hinges on. Although the twist is probably not that much of surprise here, it still kind of works as a reflection of the heroine’s mental state and as a consequence of deep rooted trauma.
A very entertaining read – if you can say that about a book with such a harrowing topic!
