Undoctored: The Story of a Medic Who Ran Out of Patients by Adam Kay

dark informative lighthearted fast-paced

4.0

Maybe I should have looked up the trigger warnings before reading but the rape in this book really took me by surprise in quite a jarring way. The eating disorder content is also quite hard to read.
That said, this is a very honest autobiography which is written in a charming and funny way and genuinely made me laugh out loud a couple of times.
I loved the way it interspersed between the story of leaving medicine and his new life since and then the flashbacks into his earlier life.
I was confused to discover that H was a women after they were played by a man in the TV show and as a result sad and surprised to read about their loss.
Looking back, H from the TV show reads as a blend of H and J.
Although it was clear that Kay loves J, he did come across quite negatively in the book, as did Kay's parents but I think this was partially intentional and part of the charm of the books honesty. It feels in many ways like having a DMC with a friend.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book and would read more of Kay's work. Although at times it is so sad that I'm not sure if I wouldn't rather hide from the realities.
