I started at this point in the series which meant all the characters were new to me. Luckily the story was easy to follow and I didn't feel left out by starting here. It was slow to progress in the beginning but soon I was caught up in the story. There were enough plots and twists to hold my interest. Most of the time. And for a female I even enjoyed the battle scenes.

This is the usual story, on the surface at least, of a future society which has experienced a Dark age but now is on the cusp of enlightenment if only the powers that be would relinquish their stranglehold. But as we all know that would never happen willing. And so the series deals with getting freedom to truly grow. I won't spoil any more for you. The psychology of the characters is well developed and quite enjoyable. Mr Weber definitely knows his craft. Definitely a good introduction to this well loved author. I would definitely read his writings again.
I didn't give a 4 stars mainly because I'm not sure I would read again. It took me quite a while to read but that may be my lifestyle. But I did enjoy it more than I expected and I like it was more than sci-fi. There was history, action, adventure and suspense rolled into one.
