The Sea, the Sea by Iris Murdoch

This is really, really good. My god.
What starts, ostensibly, as a memoir of a recently-retired theatre director, turns into a wonderful (at times surreal) and devastating mediation on a person’s true nature.
I don’t want to spoil this too much, so I’ll just say it’s thrilling. Absolutely thrilling. The voice is singular and consistent, and wholly convinces you you’re reading a memoir and not a work of fiction.
I highly, highly recommend this.
