What a beautiful, eyeopening, heartbreaking novel; Khaled has created something truly moving here.
The struggle between self-preservation and doing the right thing, cowardice and bravery, is rampant throughout this novel. How the author builds up characters, your love or hate for them, and then crushes you is just amazing. There were times I cried -in public- reading this novel, times where I wanted to throw it out the window in anger, and then finally, satisfaction when the story drew to a close.
Many of the events in this story are written in a realistic manner without being overdone, gory or overstated. He leaves much to your imagination -which if yours is very active like mine, only adds to the intensity of the situations at hand-.
I would highly recommend this novel, but only if you're not looking for something happy and go lucky because this is not that type of story.
