Food Person: A Novel by Adam Roberts
2.0

Back in, what, 2005, 2004, I was an avid Amateur Gourmet fan. I can remember his Wordpress template, and how exciting it was to read the words of someone who was as devoted to food as I was. I was so excited to see he'd written a novel!

And this book is not bad by any means. But it is like it was manufactured by a chick lit machine, spitting out all the plot beats and personality quirks on an assembly line. The characters were actually pretty unlikable the entire time, making stupid decisions and only vaguely enduring the consequences. The writing itself was perfectly good, though.

Do wish I'd known ahead of time that there would be severe burns/scarring mentioned. (Though this fire definitely should have resulted in 3rd degree burns, they're miraculously downgraded as a plot device.)
