bunnyman 's review for:
East of Eden
by John Steinbeck
dark
sad
slow-paced
i feel like this had potential as a story but its so incredibly overpowered by its misogynistic narrative that it really fails for me. making the main/only antagonist of your story a mentally ill woman who is introduced as a 'monster' from the literal moment shes born because.... ??? is soo interesting as a writing decision. having cathy continue the cycle of violence could have been a really interesting exploration of trauma if the book cared about her at all or wanted to do that, but instead huge chunks of the book are just the main men of the book wallowing over how evil she is. also, i felt like the cain/abel parallels werent really explored that much? and cal and aron didnt feel like super complex characters to me. the morality in this book is very black and white, to the point where i would almost imagine it to have an unreliable narrator, but i dont think that was intended because the narrator never really interacts with the story? also its SO racist. idk man this book annoyed me in a major way
