Lukas is perfect! Let's just get that out there first
24 year old tattoo artist and sometimes band member, Lukas, meets our 36 year old recently divorced mother of 2, Ivy, when she decides to get a tattoo to sort of represent her new life after her husband of 18 years cheats on her with a younger woman (cliche to the max!). There's this instant connection between Lukas and Ivy that Lukas can't ignore and Ivy wants to ignore. Um, yes please!
I'll say it again, Lukas is perfect. He's sweet, thoughtful, compassionate, mature, sure of what he wants, doesn't play games, honest, loyal and many other things. His maturity comes from having a life where he was forced to grow up too fast. He craves contentment and stability. He's searching for a life partner and is ready for a full on commitment. His only problem is he can't seem to find the right woman for him. He's not interested in partying and jumping from one woman to the next. He wants a family, and that ladies and gentlemen, is what makes him perfect. After spending some time with Ivy, he knows she's the one for him. He just has to convince her. He is definitely swoon-worthy!
"I don't love much, but when I do, I love hard and fierce." OMG!!! Who doesn't want that?!
Ivy was sweet and a character I liked. Although her life was literally shattered from her husband and the father of her children, she picked herself up and did something for herself. She's immediately attracted to Lukas but tries to brush it off when she learns there's a 12 years age difference between them. Lukas is persistent though and finally breaks through her insecurities of being an older woman. When she finally gives Lukas a chance, she's all in. She doesn't let the fact that he doesn't "look" like her type of guy deter her and she becomes a bit protective and angry when other people throw his looks in her face (piercings, tattoos, long hair). Her ex is a piece of work. He throws away their marriage and family for a new piece of ass and then freaks when she moves on. His actions later in the book are deplorable, to say the least.
Now for the part I hated and my rant:
Ivy's teenage daughter, Macy, annoyed the crap out of me throughout the book. Teenagers suck and are selfish but she took it to a whole other level and wasn't even sorry. Ivy was 18 when she had Macy, just like I was 18 when I had my daughter. I hope to god my child never, ever treats me the way Macy treated Ivy. The way Macy tries to justify her actions and tries to place some of the blame on other people, specifically Lukas, is disgusting. I'm not saying a mother should ever choose a man over their children, because they shouldn't, and Ivy didn't do that. She struggled with getting to the bottom of their little situation and who to trust. I can't say I would have reacted any differently than Ivy though when the truth came out. What Macy did was truly disgusting and inconceivable. It just took selfish to a whole other level when she had such little regard for the woman who gave birth to her, loved her and raised her, and to be able to hurt her own mother the way she did over something so completely meaningless. Ugh, I could go on forever over the selfishness and lack of morals in teenagers but I won't. That was the only thing I hated about this book.
I wasn't sure I would like the older woman/younger man scenario but it works here. Lukas and Ivy work and are good together. Ivy and Lukas got their happy ending (one I wish I could have read a little more of) and even gave us a nice little surprise in the end.
Definitely a good read :-)
