Forest Hills Bootleg Society by Nicole Goux, Dave Baker

I placed this on hold at the library a while ago and waited a long time for it to come in. Maybe my anticipation got my hopes too high for this one?

I still really love the premise of this, but the execution left me wanting more. The multiple bubbles to describe characters, even minor ones, was distracting and tedious. Between chapters there would be full pages of text with backstory on characters. I would have rather seen this in flashbacks than blurbs of text. It just didn't work.

At times there were side characters that needed to be involved in the story more or less. The amount of time they were given didn't' flow with the story and seemed unnecessary. It made me think of all the characters you would see in a teen movie like Can't Harldy Wait or something, which is fine. Except that it's done better in movies like that with short snippets of the characters and their role in the whole story. Here, it seemed like, what was the point?

An interesting premise, but I'd like to see it done better.
