A Face in the Dark and Other Hauntings: Collected Stories of the Supernatural by Ruskin Bond

2.0

ACTUAL RATING: 2.5

This book is an anthology of twenty eight supernatural tales by acclaimed Indian author, Ruskin Bond. While the stories aren’t exactly thrilling or even remotely frightening, they’re atmospheric and bring to mind the granny’s tales we all heard as children. From malevolent bhooths to mischievous prets, creepy churels and haunted peepal trees, I was transported into the ancient, forgotten pleasures of Indian villages. Where the neighbors were friendly, everyone knew everybody else and the old nanas or nanis were always willing to regale us with ghost stories over a cup of hot, sweet chai or cool sherbet.

I would ordinarily have LOVED a collection such as this one, but IMO, the stories were too short, clichéd and predictable.
