Queen Sugar
by Natalie Baszile
The summer sun beat down on her shoulders as she walked along the fields, examining the crop. Her world was spinning out of control, not knowing what even the next second would bring. Her life has taken a tumultuous turn, but she’s determined to make everything work. She has to.
Queen Sugar shares Charley’s story. She has inherited a sugarcane farm from her father, but she knows nothing about sugarcane or the land it’s growing on. She has no one to help her run the farm and she’s drowning in defeat.
I was intrigued by the story and enjoyed learning about sugarcane, because I honestly didn’t know anything about it, but the story got boring really quick. The author had beautiful descriptions, but it started to become over the top and redundant. I also wish the characters’ relationships would have been explored more… I felt that was lacking in the story quite a bit. The ending was also very rushed compared to the rest of the book, which was slow moving. While interesting in some parts, this book left me wanting a lot.
