Ha. That was funny.
This tickled just about every space geek bone in my body. A programmer gets the chance to run a self replicating space probe, that gets shot out to Boldly Go... yada yada.
This is light, kind of comic sci-fi. But full of good relatively hard science fact.
Bob is a great character, and the many iterations of Bob just get better.
It's not a very long story, and not complicated, I plowed through it in a weekend, and I'm not a particularly fast consumer.
All around this was a very entertaining soft sci-fi. With a terrible cliff hanger at the end, so don't expect a nice neat clean ending.
