Things I liked:
-Most (not all) characters were well rounded
-The plot was not driven by romance
-Plot was unpredictable. I can name at least two moments were I was like "HOLY SHIT NO WAY!" and had to reread.
-The world and the technology and whatnot
-Emmett's friends Billal and Kaya
-Good balance of humor and darkness
Things I did not like:
-Some main characters were pretty flat
-The weird romance thrown in at the end that was kind of like instalove and was very sudden and out of place. It really did feel like an editor was like "Hey! We need a romance, fix this!" So the author tried to add something last minute.
-It was never really clear what nyxia was or how it worked.
-Could have had better world building
-The whole "file under L for Later" characterization quirk. I hated it. It was REALLY annoying and every page had some variation of that. Luckily it was explained toward the end, so I kind of got it, but it was waaaay overused.
-Lack of details in some parts. Like, a character got injured and was out of the competition for a LONG time, but the injury that was described didn't actually seem that bad? Also, a few points I had to reread over and over again because I didn't get it and eventually just gave up and read on, hoping I wasn't missing some important nuance.
So. Liked it overall, but it wasn't perfect. I will read the next book if I can get it cheap or free. Right now the ebook is like $12, so not gonna happen right now. 3.5 Stars.
