“What are you looking for?”
I kinda approached reading Bath Haus with some trepidation, not sure if it would be a book for me. Having read some reviews and knowing my propensity for a dark thriller, I decided to give it a go. And I’ve got to say I’m glad I did.
Told in the alternating voices of Oliver and Nathan, Bath Haus delves into the dark and shadowy parts that sit hidden beneath the surface. The parts that rarely find their way into the light of day, submerged beneath a veneer of outward facing respectability.
Bath Haus highlights the merry-go-round that is relationships.. the cause and effect, the domino patterns, the words spoken and unspoken, the personality differences, baggage that we all bring, power differentials, use and abuse and the list goes on. Oliver and Nathan are complex men, each in their own way, looking for things that will ground them, give them security, meet their needs, help them escape what they are both running from.
The question “What are you looking for?”, is like a recurring motif throughout the book. It is a deliberately provocative question asked by every character and to every character. Every one is looking for something and sometimes these things aren’t consciously known and then what seems like all of a sudden is in fact the outworking of what is being looked for..... with consequences and outcomes that take their own course.
“Last night at Haus was an escalation, the culmination of many building moments. Boundaries broken, lines scuttled, thresholds crossed. I’d started weeks ago, growing more brazen, thirstier with each passing day” p33.
Author, PJ Vernon has done a brilliant job in my opinion of breathing real humanity into this book. It is provocative, possibly triggering, anxiety inducing, and an actual adrenalin rush. Dark and gripping and uniquely reflective.
