The Bully
by Devney Perry
I love some good natured bantering, and Nellie and Cal had it (for the most part - in the present day). There was certainly a couple times where the verbal sparring was cruel, and it didn't always make me like them together. I struggled to seem them as a couple because they seemed so immature; I think they failed to have one meaningful conversation about high school until literally the bonus epilogue. I can forgive the behavior of teenagers who lack better ways to express themselves but carrying that behavior over to adulthood is no good. And it's not just Cal, Nellie is also petty and mean for the majority of the novel. I felt like there was a lot of personal, internal character development but we never got the relationship development. It felt like there was nothing and then 'I love you.'
So while I found the story entertaining, it didn't really vibe with me as a romance.
