faintgirl 's review for:
Tropic of Capricorn
by Henry Miller
This book is complete insanity, and also pretty wonderful. Miller alternates between a scathing view of American society that still applies pretty much in it's entirety today, and his sexual exploits which are numerous, extroverted, and clearly pre HIV/AIDs. Almost everyone Miller meets in 1920s NYC is sex obsessed and unhappy with their lot, drifting through meaningless jobs and mad about it. It jumps through time and place and is pretty much stream of consciousness throughout. And despite this, I liked it a lot. The truths have not changed, even if our response to them has shifted somewhat.
