“Raising children is like flying a kite; bit by bit we release the string to let them fly higher. Sometimes we need to reel the string back in a bit. The trick is to work out why you’re reeling it back. Is it for your own comfort, or is it from concern that she is venturing further into heavy winds that will surely crush her? Only you can be the judge. You won’t always get it right. Then again, no one does. We all make the best call we can in any situation with the available information. But our job as parents, day by day and year by year, is to loosen our grip on our girls and let them soar.”
