The Left Hand of Darkness
by Ursula K. Le Guin
What an unexpected treasure, one I can't recommend strongly enough. The book is justly famous for Le Guin's deconstruction of gender identity and exploration of what, precisely, it would mean to rebuild society without it. This is the rare "philosophical novel" that lives up to the hype. But it is more than that--Le Guin's descriptions of Gethen's desolate glacial plains are themselves worth the price of admission. Go buy a copy already.
