The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh

2.0

Honestly I'm so torn on what to rate this book. On one hand I liked the story, I liked most of the characters and I liked the writing. But then again a lot of the story, characters, and writing annoyed me at the same time xD .

First of all I liked Celine. She didn't let anyone take advantage of her, she spoke up and was a little snippy sometimes. I liked the banter between her and Bastien, not to be confused with the robot Bastion -

But there were times where their banter seemed to go on FOREVER. And their conversations were just so snarky, that I began to feel frustrated. In the end, is their relationship even a healthy one if they cant go one minute without insulting the other xD?

The writing of the story was pretty. Sometimes, however, it was so flowery it became exhausting to read. Especially when page after page has sentences like, "the thought startled Celine. She banished it with a toss of her head, restoring her senses so that she wouldn't appear to be a simpleton" (84). Or like, "something about it unsettled her, as if Celine were gazing at a painting instead of a person. Perhaps a piece by Rembrandt, a master who always managed to catch details others missed, rendering his subjects in an otherworldly light." It's so much description and details that I couldn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to.

The story was fun to read but even that seemed to drag on. There were some chapters that felt like they were only to add to the story's length.
when the villain was revealed I had no idea who they were either. It took away a lot of the fun of it for me.

Overall, I guess I liked The Beautiful? But I have more negative things to say than positive ones so it's a 2 from me.
